Shirodhara
Shirodhara is a deeply calming Ayurvedic therapy where a continuous stream of warm herbal oil is poured over the forehead (the "third eye" region). It is one of the most effective treatments for stress, anxiety, insomnia, and mental fatigue.

What is Shirodhara?
The word Shirodhara comes from "Shiro" (head) and "Dhara" (flow). In this iconic Ayurvedic therapy, a steady stream of warm medicated oil, milk, or buttermilk is poured in a rhythmic pattern over the forehead — specifically targeting the Ajna Marma (the point between the eyebrows).
How Does It Work?
The gentle, continuous flow creates a profoundly meditative state by:
- Stimulating the pineal and pituitary glands
- Calming the hypothalamus and regulating hormones
- Inducing alpha brain wave states (deep relaxation)
- Soothing the nervous system and reducing cortisol
Conditions Treated
- Chronic stress and anxiety disorders
- Insomnia and disturbed sleep
- Migraine and tension headaches
- Mental fatigue and brain fog
- Hypertension (as an adjunct therapy)
- Early-stage neurological conditions
- PTSD and emotional trauma
Your Shirodhara Experience at Aajna Ayurcure
Each session lasts 45–60 minutes. The oil is selected based on your Prakriti — Brahmi Tailam for mental clarity, Ksheerabala for nerve calming, or medicated buttermilk (Takradhara) for Pitta-related headaches. The treatment is often combined with a head and scalp massage for enhanced effect.
Many patients describe the experience as "floating" or "deeply meditative." It is common to drift into a state between sleep and wakefulness — a deeply healing zone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Shirodhara
No. The oil is carefully directed over the forehead using a specialised vessel (Dhara Patra). Cotton plugs protect the ears, and the flow is precisely controlled.
A single session provides immediate relaxation. For chronic conditions like insomnia or anxiety, a course of 7–14 sessions is typically recommended for lasting results.
We recommend leaving the oil on for at least 1–2 hours after the session for maximum absorption. A herbal hair wash can be done later.
Shirodhara with appropriate oils can be beneficial during the second and third trimesters, but only under qualified Ayurvedic supervision. Please consult Dr. Ranjini first.
